George (60) who has been with United for 25 years, told the Carluke and Lanark Gazette that the individual donations each marked £1 for every year of United’s existence.

“We got £1600 donated in 48 hours,” he said. “People are very inventive in how they generate money in lockdown.

“We’ve still got bills to pay (during lockdown) and this money has taken the pressure right off us.”

George was speaking in the wake of United – who are not expected to resume playing competitively until October – staging their AGM at 2m social distancing on Monday night, within the covered enclosure at Moor Park.

“Little did we know in 1920 when the club was formed, that 100 years later we would be holding an outdoors AGM!” George added.

“I was telling people at the meeting that this was probably one of the only things that’s gone ahead on its regular date, because everything you can think of has been cancelled.”
