Plug finally gets pulled on West of Scotland Leagues

Organisers have finally decided enough is enough, with coronavirus halting play in all four divisions since early January and no immediate prospect of a return to play due to the requirement of weekly Covid-19 testing being carried out on players and staff when such an option is not financially viable to clubs at that level.

A statement on the Maryhill FC Twitter account read: “So the league is over. Null & void.

"If truth be told it never really got going. We took a punt in the hope we might get most of the games played.

"We are already planning next season, and will sit down with the manager soon to sort out our immediate future. Will keep you posted.”

Prior to the coronavirus sabbatical, local football team Maryhill were ninth in conference A of the West of Scotland League, with seven points from their six games played.

But it will now be this summer before their players can take to the field again, with the successful roll-out of a coronavirus vaccination programme across the UK giving renewed optimism that our lives can gradually return to some kind of normality over the next few weeks and months.
