Ricki Lamie: Motherwell visiting Ross County on a mild August night is better than going in mid-December!

It could hardly be a more surreal opening game of the season: Ross County away on a Monday night in front of no spectators.

But Motherwell FC defender Ricki Lamie, newly arrived on a two-year deal after leaving Livingston, is accentuating the positives about the live Sky Sports encounter in Dingwall on August 3.

He told the Times and Speaker: “I think if you asked anyone in the league I think they would rather go up to Ross County on a nice, mild Monday evening in August rather than go up in the middle of December midweek.

“You have to play everybody at some point so it will be brilliant just to get the strip on and get out competitively.

“I know that Ross County have added well and I think they will be looking to get off to a good start as well as ourselves. We are raring to go.

“The recruitment from the gaffer and the backroom staff at the club over the past number of years has been brilliant.

“And hopefully with the additions coming in we can go and boost that again. If it adds to last season’s finish then we’ll be onto something good. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later that we’re playing in front of crowds.”

It has emerged that Jake Carroll – a rival for Lamie’s left back berth at Motherwell – is now close to resuming running in training, around 20 weeks after undergoing an operation to treat his injured Achilles.

“Jake is a brilliant player and had a brilliant season last year,” Lamie said.

“And I think it will add to the competition that’s right across the squad.

“The squad is strong right across the board. That can only be a good thing in terms of standards and everybody fighting for their position.

“It will be good to get everybody back fit.

“The level of coaching and the attention to detail at Motherwell has really impressed me. The standard in training has been top notch.

“Considering that we were laid off for as long, the boys have been looking sharp and the fitness levels are extremely high which is testament to the boys and the staff at the club.”
