When Kilwinning Rangers took a two goal lead midway through the second half at Abbey Park, Kilwinning on Saturday – switched from an unplayable Guy’s Meadow – it looked like United’s West of Scotland cup hopes were over.

The Cumbernauld boys, however, fought back to level the match with ten minutes to go and then the David Buchanan show took over.

With only a few minutes left the home team were awarded a penalty saved by the United goalkeeper.

In the resultant penalty shoot-out Buchanan not only brought off a great stop from one of the Kilwinning spot kicks, but took the decisive 12 yard shot himself to beat Martin Barclay in the Rangers goal and ensure that United would be in the draw for Round 3 of the prestigious trophy.
