Kilsyth Rangers hold out to claim three points

The Duncansfield side travelled a very sunny Robertson Park and notched up a 2-1 victory over Thorniwood.

Kilsyth kicked off and went on the attack straight away but Frannie Kelly couldn’t shake his defender and his shot was easily saved by Fraser.

The home team were awarded a free-kick with only three minutes on the clock after Waters clattered Duffy. It looked like Queen was going to shoot but Murphy played a reverse pass to him down the line. Queen was then taken down in the box by Waters, the Thorniewood player wasn’t going anywhere, an unnecessary foul resulted in the referee pointing to the spot.

McGowan stepped up and sent his shot crashing high in to the net giving Duke no chance and putting Thorniewood one up.

Dalzell came close to extending the Wood lead but his snapshot on the turn went just wide.

David Waters then escaped a second yellow card when he again committed a foul, this time on the half way-line. The referee told him no more. He was walking a tightrope for the rest of the game.

Kilsyth weren’t in the game at all up until the half-hour mark. Dolan took the ball and managed to beat three defenders, but his shot hit the side netting.

The visitors had few chances with Dolan and Frannie Kelly both coming close to scoring. Dolan looked dangerous on the run and it was one of these mazy runs that put Kilsyth back on level terms. He picked the ball up out wide and drove at the heart of the Thorniewood defence, beating three defenders and then firing his shot past Fraser at his near post.
