Lenzie YC under-15s celebrate after winning the CKDYL B League title

The Lenzie lads took the trophy with a penalty shootout victory over Gartsherrie BC after their final at Cumbernauld United’s Guy’s Meadow ground finished 1-1 after extra-time.

Lenzie started well and lone striker Thomson was always a thorn in the Gartsherrie side, while Gartsherrie were always a threat a set pieces.

Lenzie opened the scoring in the 21st minute when a Tedeschi corner was headed onto the bar by Dudman and he was first to react by volleying the ball over the line from close range,

After the break Gartsherrie saw a few efforts on goal and LYC ’keeper McQuillan had to make a couple important saves.

At the other end Tedeschi saw his 18-yard shot hit the post and then, after Thomson was fouled in the box, the ’keeper made a fine save from a Tedeschi penalty.

A Murray corner scraped the bar but Gartsherrie got a late equaliser following a breakaway and the game went to extra-time.

In scorching heat both teams did their best, but the only real chance fell with seconds left to play to Kasubandi but his seemingly certain goal was somehow blocked on the line,

Successful penalty takers for Lenzie were Cairney, Thomson, Tedeschi and Dudman and after Gartsherrie missed two penaltie Kinnell stepped up for Lenzie to score and win the game for Lenzie.

Meanwhile Lenzie Festival matches last weekend included the younger age groups 2005, 2007 and 2009 with games greatly enjoyed by the many teams taking part and played in a friendly manner. All matches took place at Lenzie Academy and the skills the young players showed were a credit to their coaches. The competitive 11-a-sides were played at Loretto and the 2001 winners were Central who defeated Westerton in the final.  Lenzie took third place, beating Greystone Rovers from Dumfries. Winners of the 2002 section were Glasgow East who defeated Lenzie 1-0 in a closely contested final. Lenzie won all their group games. In the 2003 section Crosshouse from Kilmarnock defeated Lenzie in the A final and Carbrain won the B final, defeating Rossvale. Lenzie would like to thank St Mungo Amateurs for the use of their ground and all the referees who kept the festival rolling. The festival concludes this weekend.
