With Rabs six goals in front before the half hour mark, the Adamslie Park side had the cup tie well and truly done and dusted and a second round place assured against a disappointing Darvel side.

Rob Roy pounded the Darvel goal from the first blast of the referee’s whistle and it was no surprise when they took a three minute lead when Morton headed home a perfect Smith cross. Six minutes later Rabs added a second when Urquhart’s cross was headed on by Morton for Sawyers to drive the ball into the net from eight yards.

In the 13th minute Rabs extended their lead when Mitchell won possession 25 yards from goal before dispatching a sweetly struck 25 yard shot past the Darvel keeper. Rabs’ pressure was relentless - Martin had a decent run into the box and Darvel blocked for a corner before Morton crashed an eight yard shot against the Darvel upright.

Urquhart just failed to add to Rabs’ total, sending his drive narrowly past, then minutes later Sawyers released Martin who sent over a perfect cross for Morton to drill home for the Adamslie Park side’s fourth. Rabs continued to help themselves to goals with skipper Smith rising to send a powerful header into the Darvel net for his side’s fifth and to put the tie completely out of reach of their Ayrshire opponents.

Two minutes later rampant Rabs made it six when McKenzie released Martin to send over a perfectly weighted cross for Morton to rattle home his well deserved hat-trick. Minutes before the break Mitchell’s header from a Deas corner flew over the Darvel bar.

Rob Roy were denied a stonewall penalty in the 58th minute when Sawyers was pulled down as he advanced inside the Darvel box only for Referee Brown to add insult to injury by showing the big striker a yellow card for diving - a decision which did not endear the whistler to the home support and coaching staff.

Darvel broke clear on the hour mark but Henderson’s pass found Lacey in an offside position. With the visitors packing their defence, goal chances were fewer for Rabs although Duff, Team and Smith were just off target with decent efforts.

Gow squandered a rare Darvel chance in the 76th minute when he fired wide with only home keeper McPherson to beat. With eight minutes remaining Rabs notched their seventh goal when Carter made a forceful run into the Darvel penalty area his blocked shot fell to Deas who lashed the loose ball into the net from five yards to complete the scoring.

Rob Roy: McPherson, Carter, McKenzie, Martin, Smith, Mitchell, Duff (Watt 70), Urquhart (McQuade 64), Sawyers, Morton (Team 45), Deas. Unused Subs: Hunter, Jarvis.
