The Bully Wee had defeated Montrose 1-0 at Broadwood earlier in the season, but they had less than happy memories of Links Park from last season having lost 8-1 and 3-1 in Angus.

But, hopes were high some demons could be laid to rest and the visitors started in the right spirit with Liam Cusack showing good feet and Steph McDonald taking over to be one-on-one with Michael Andrews, however the keeper won this early dual.

On 19 minutes though Clyde took a deserved lead as Cusack crossed from the right and John Neill sneaked in between the two central defenders to head home.

Unfortunately the lead only lasted four minutes as Hutchison parried a Scott Johnston shot back into the danger area and Jonathan Crawford eased the ball to Paul Lunan who curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The away side were eager to hit back with Neill pulling the strings in midfield and he played a delightful ball over the top which Cusack got to ahead of Andrews, but his toepoke was wide.

At the other end Martin Boyle’s effort was half stopped by Hutchison and it needed Declan Gallacher to clear off the line and keep the scores level.

Johnston then hit the outside of the post for the home side as they upped the ante and four minutes into the second half took the lead.

A Clyde attack was broken up and a quick break by Montrose saw Sean Pierce find Douglas Cameron and he cracked home from the edge of the box.

Paul Hay fired just over from 25 yards and Cusack managed to knock the ball over the bar from two yards out as the Bully Wee desperately hunted for an equaliser.

Paul McMullan, Michael Oliver and Mark Archdeacon replaced Irvine, Neill and John Sweeney as Clyde went with four up front for the closing stages.

Three minutes into injury time Crawford pulled off what looked a brilliant save to deny Archdeacon an equaliser, but not being the goalkeeper the entire Clyde team appealed for a penalty, but referee Don Robertson wasn’t interested and the Cumbernauld side were out the cup.

Clyde have no match this weekend as their home game with Alloa has been postponed due to the Wasps facing Annan in a Scottish Cup replay.
