Motherwell face Rangers at Hampden next month.

Motherwell chief executive Brian Caldwell has opened up on the ticket price reasons for the club’s upcoming Premier Sports Cup semi-final with Rangers.

Some had criticisms over the price of a ticket for the game, with adult briefs ranging from £30-£38 for an adult while the club have put on supporters buses for the game at £20 per-head. Motherwell have an initial allocation of 7,500 with the potential of up to 14,000 depending on sales.

Caldwell has opened up on the price structure agreed between themselves, Rangers, plus other semi-finalists Celtic and Aberdeen. He said: “Because the money is pulled when it comes to the semi-final, the two semi-finals have to be the same prices.

“The four clubs have to agree. My preference was to keep the same price as last year which for example, I think the cheapest ticket was £28. There was a movement to potentially look at £30 and the other three clubs have a say. It’s not always a case of what I says goes, I have to be fair to that.

“The idea was to put it up to £2 for the cheapest adult price but what we did get out of that is concessions throughout the stadium which would help some people. £30 might seem more than it was last year, it is still cheaper for most of the stands for a Rangers or Celtic game at Fir Park. Not having concessions throughout the stadium didn’t make sense to me when we do it at normal fixtures throughout the Premiership season.”

Stuart Kettlewell’s side on the pitch alongside that cup achievement have found themselves fourth in the table amid a strong start to the season. Top performers like Ewan Wilson, Aston Oxborough and Dan Casey have deals expiring next summer and Caldwell says he’s hopeful some new deals can be tied up soon for some of those with expiring terms.

He added to club media: “I am a great believer that once the window closes, we start to look at who is out of contract at the end of the season, before that or whatever. We have a number of players out of contract at the end of the season, probably not as many as we did last season. There’s been a lot of ongoing discussions.

“These things don’t happen overnight. We’re quite hopeful that very soon that we can hopefully tie a few of them down to give us a bit of continuity and get that done early.”
