Nothing lucky about Black Watch seven - just pure skill

Credit must be given to both sets of players for the quality of play in difficult underfoot conditions. Hillwood were finding it hard to return to past glories, but put up a real effort to compete with a Blackies side in good form.

Despite early chances it was not until the 23rd minute that Watch went ahead. The ball was played out of defence from Donnelly to Prentice, whose long ball through the middle saw Steven Aitken race away from defender Slater to slot the ball past keeper Kennedy.

In the early stages Hillwood created problems for the Watch defence, but on each occasion keeper Al Naeme brought off fine saves.

Logan finished superbly to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute – after a Cairney pass.

Watch were now in charge despite the difficult conditions and when they went 3-0 ahead in the 37th minute it was almost certain they were going to pick up the points.

McGeough and McIlroy were involved in the leading-up play. Aitken played the ball across goal and Prentice found the net.

Conditions were becoming more difficult for the players, but both teams did not lessen their efforts.

Hillwood’s goal came in the 70th minute when Watch defenders indulged in over-passing in the 18-yard box and the own goal gave the visitors hope they might finish strongly.

It had the opposite effect, however, with all the chances that had been passed up now being taken.

In the 78th minute a Haddow pass to Docherty on the right saw the wing half play the ball across goal for Logan to net.

Cairney, the best player on the park, made it 5-1 in the 82nd minute after a Causland pass down the right to Docherty whose ball found Cairney. He slammed past keeper Kennedy.

Docherty again was instrumental in setting up goal number six. After leading-up play from Whiteford and Watt down the right, the ball went to Docherty and he played it across goal. There was Haddow to volley the ball high into the net from 15 yards.

Blackies made it 7-1 in the 89th minute when Aitken accepted a poor clearance from keeper Kennedy and the striker lobbed the ball over him to finish off a super scoreline for Blackies.

Watch are due to play Glasgow Amateurs in a league game at Station Road on Saturday – 2pm kick-off.

Tote numbers for Saturday were 38 and 1. There was no winner, £750 next week.
