Peterhead close in on safety with win over Clyde

Peterhead were this week preparing for a trip to East Fife which could guarantee their survival from relegation – if it comes to that.

Home wins over Falkirk and Clyde left Jim McInally’s side needing just one more win to wipe out any threat of relegation.

And even that’s assuming rivals Dumbarton don't lose at home to bottom side Forfar Athletic on Tuesday night. A Forfar win would mean Peterhead were safe regardless.

Following their win over Falkirk, courtesy of a late Jason Brown goal, Peterhead had to show patience against Clyde – but eventually racked up their best win of the season.

After a goalless first half the breakthrough came nine minutes after the restart.

Andrew McCarthy was felled by Kevin Nicoll’s late challenge inside the box and skipper Scott Brown stepped up to send David Mitchell the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The Blue Toon doubled their advantage just two minutes later, Hamish Ritchie finding the net after Jason Brown had headed on Kieran Freeman’s free-kick.

Peterhead then had Jason Brown red-carded for a second yellow but Ritchie sealed victory on 73 minutes with a delightful finish.

McInally was delighted with his team in general, but naturally particularly pleased with the contribution of on-loan Inverurie Locos midfielder Ritchie.

The Blue Toon boss said: “He's been an outstanding loan signing for us; he's a great boy and a lovely football player to watch and his composure is absolutely frightening.”
