Rabs could be set to sign former Dons stiker

The 29-year-old has been without a club for the past season but can boast an impressive pedigree from his time with Aberdeen, Falkirk, Ross County and Clyde.

He is perhaps best known for his first senior goal for the Dons — a match winner at Celtic Park in October 2004.

The striker is working towards full fitness and Maxwell run the rule over the trialist in he coming weeks.

The Rabs boss said: “John has been out the game for the past year but has come in here and his attitude has been excellent.

“He just needs to get his fitness levels up but he’s up for the challenge.

“It’s a bit of a gamble for us but I think it’s one that will pay off once John gets up to speed.

“He is a terrific finisher and has played at the top level so it’s definitely something we will be monitoring over the next few weeks.”

Stewart played a part in Rob Roy’s final pre-season game as they ran out 2-0 winners at Cambuslang on Saturday.

Goals from Gary McMenamin and youngster Stevie Aitken sealed the win.

They now move on the sectional League Cup this week with games against Rossvale and Cumbernauld.
