Ex Premier League transfer guru insists Rangers have 'signed a real top player' amid Sunderland scouting trip

The former scout has been looking over a star currently at Rangers.

A former Premier League scout insists Rangers have a top asset on their hands - amid Brentford and Sunderland interest.

Olwethu Makhanya has shone in defence for the Premiership side managed by Derek McInnes since joining from Philadelphia Union. Brentford and Sunderland are both said to have had scouts north of the border to watch him which is no surprise to Mick Brown.

A former scout and transfer expert at clubs like Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham United and Sunderland, Brown feels Rangers have signed someone with big potential. That said, he does not feel the Ibrox club will want to entertain offers for Makhanya just yet.

Will Rangers look to sell Olwethu Makhanya amid Premier League interest?

Brown told Football Insider: “Rangers will be delighted with his form since he came to the club in the summer. We spoke about how difficult it can be for Rangers to sign players and where they might have to look, and they've looked over in the MLS and signed a real top player.

"Whenever a player is making waves at either Rangers or Celtic, they're bound to attract interest from the Premier League, so I don't doubt scouts will be watching him. But Rangers will be doing everything in their power to keep hold of him because they won't want to lose him just months into his career.

"Even if a big offer comes in, I can't see them letting him go because he's such an important part of what they're trying to do and the success they are aiming to have this season. So I think Rangers will be pretty clear in their stance, they don't want to let him go and they're not going to entertain offers."

Next up for Rangers is an away day in the Premiership against Dundee. Boss McInnes said after last week’s 3-1 win at home against Kilmarnock: “First of all, it was job done. I am pleased to get another win; that’s seven in a row, and we go top, which was the objective. I can’t say it didn’t give me concern after the boys were away for so long. Eight of the starters were away on international duty, so there was a little concern about having them away travelling and losing that connection.

“But in spells in the first half we were strong; we scored three goals, but there were signs we looked a bit disjointed at times and slow to react in some situations. It is job done, the crowd were brilliant, but I wish we had added to the goals, but we didn’t have the energy or quality to do that.”
