Ex-Rangers ace confirms ‘step back’ from professional football just weeks after new transfer
Rangers Academy product Ben Williamson has announced he is taking a break from professional football
Former Rangers midfielder Ben Williamson has announced he will be taking a ‘step back’ from professional football just weeks after his transfer to League Two side East Kilbride.
The 24-year-old joined the Kilby in January after being absent for more than a year while recovering from serious injuries sustained in a horror car accident.
Williamson was involved in the crash in December 2024 after accepting a lift from a friend. He confirmed in his first interview after the crash that he has no memory of what happened but knows he is ‘lucky to be alive’.

Williamson was under contract with Hamilton Accies at the time of the car accident. He had to undergo surgery on a broken leg and pelvis as part of his long road to recovery.
Earlier this month, he returned to the football space and signed for latest club East Kilbride. The midfielder had been eager to get going with his new side and was feeling positive about his transfer.
“It has been horrible, to be honest. When all that stuff happened, I didn’t know if I could be normal again, never mind play football,” he said at the time, reflecting on the difficult year.
“But now I am back - it’s not that I took things for granted before - I want to go and prove myself and take things by storm at East Kilbride.”
However, Williamson is now taking some time to focus on himself again, just weeks after hoping to kick-start his career. He has released a personal statement to confirm his decision, with no indication of when he may return to football again after this upcoming absence.
Posting on his Facebook page, Williamson wrote: “Gonna need to take a step back from professional football for a while, hard choice but I need to get myself and leg right.
“It’s all I have known since I can remember but hopefully the return will be on.”
Williamson started his career in the youth ranks of Rangers and enjoyed successful loan spells with the likes of Raith Rovers, Dundee and Partick Thistle. He joined Accies in January 2024 and helped them secure promotion to the Championship, before his second season was cut short due to the horrific crash and his injuries sustained.
