Ex Rangers kid linked with surprise switch to European outfit after 12 month EFL stint

Rangers academy product Alex Lowry has been linked with a move abroad amid lack of playing time

Former Rangers ace Alex Lowry has been linked with a move to Sweden, just 12 months after his departure from Ibrox to pursue a new challenge in England.

The 22-year-old left the Light Blues last January to sign for EFL League One side Wycombe Wanderers on a permanent deal. It marked the first time Lowry has left Scotland to pursue a move in his footballing career.

However, the midfielder has since been the subject of interest from Sweden, as his time with Wycombe has produced inconsistent opportunities. Lowry has made 15 League One appearances so far this season but has not seen any action for the last seven games.

Swedish side ‘launch bid’ for ex-Rangers starlet Alex Lowry

Helsingborgs IF are looking to strike a deal with Wycombe to bring Lowry in on loan, via Record Sport. The club play in the Superettan, Sweden’s second tier of football. Celtic legend Henrik Larsson also spent time with Helsingborg during his career.

The former Sweden international enjoyed stints at the club before and after his time with Celtic, winning the Swedish Cup with them in 2006. After his retirement, Larsson managed Helsingborg on two separate occasions.

The Scania outfit, currently managed by Perth-born Stevie Grieve, want to bring Lowry in on loan ahead of the start of their league season in April. Helsingborg will be looking to improve on last season’s results, which saw them finish seventh in the table.

Grieve already knows Lowry from his time coming up through the Rangers youth ranks and ‘rates him highly’. He also believes a spell in Sweden could get his season back on track and potentially put him in the shop window for other clubs.

Alex Lowry looking for more regular football

Lowry is keen to get regular minutes under his belt after spending most of his time on the fringes at Rangers. He is eager to propel his season but will now need to look overseas for a potential move.

As well as Helsingborg, American side Sacramento Republic are also said to be interested in his services. The USL Championship side are keen on Lowry but Grieve is hoping he can win the battle for his signature and bring him to Helsingborg, as he prepares for his first season in charge of the club.
