Ex Rangers boss who left with two unwanted stats locked in 'advanced' talks over EFL management return
The Englishman was axed by Rangers last October but is now closing in on a dugout return
A former Rangers manager who endured the shortest reign of any permanent manager in the club’s 153-year history is in ‘advanced’ discussions to take over at Leicester City.
Russell Martin has been out of work since lasting just 123 day in the Ibrox hotseat. The Englishman was sacked last October after cementing the lowest win rate of any manager in the Light Blues history.
The former Southampton boss was the first appointment made by Rangers new American owners, 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh. But they were forced to cut their losses within four months after a disastrous start to the season.
A 1-1 draw at Falkirk proved the final straw for the Rangers hierarchy, with Martin requiring a police escort out of the stadium as furious supporters took aim at the 40-year-old.
Now he could be set for a return to the dugout with the Foxes, who suffered back-to-back relegations in the last two seasons and are gearing up for life in EFL League One.
According to The Telegraph, Leicester have been in locked in talks with Martin about fronting up their summer rebuild. The former Scotland international is understood to be ‘weighing up’ an offer from a club who have ‘always admired’ him for his style of play.
Martin has overseas clubs also interested in his services, but it’s claimed he is ‘seriously considering’ the prospect of taking his next job in the third tier of English football.
Facing increased scrutiny from supporters, Leicester officials know they can ill-afford another nightmarish campaign. In a rare interview carried out with the media in February, the club’s owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha outlined his determination to appoint a new manager with a similar philosophy to Enzo Maresca, who achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2024.
“We have to get back to the identity of Leicester,” he said. “What type of football we should play and what players we should bring. I think it was so clear when we got Enzo on board, what football we should play, and the type of player we should bring in.”
