Former Rangers player makes transfer move as 'significant pace' attracts Dons to free agent swoop

The defender is moving on after three years at Rugby Park

Former Rangers centre-back Lewis Mayo has signed a three year deal at Aberdeen upon the expiration of his Kilmarnock contract.

The 26-year old spent four years in Govan after coming through the youth ranks and Mayo was farmed out on loan on four separate occasions during his time at Rangers. They were to Partick Thistle (twice), Dunfermline Athletic and Kilmarnock. He made his move permanent to the latter in 2023 and has been a mainstay at the back for them ever since.

Despite suffering a recurring hamstring injury last season, Mayo made 22 Killie appearances on the final year of his contract, as Neil McCann’s side managed to stay in the division despite being dragged into a relegation battle. The Ayrshire side finished level on points with Stephen Robinson’s Aberdeen, where he will now move on a free.

Former Rangers man makes SPFL switch

A Dons statement read: “Lewis Mayo has agreed a three-year deal to join Aberdeen when his current contract expires this summer. The 26-year-old centre-back, who most recently played for Kilmarnock FC, will officially become a Dons player ahead of the 2026/27 season, adding leadership and versatility to the Club’s defensive unit.

“Lewis, who established himself as one of the Scottish Premiership’s most consistent defenders during his time at Rugby Park, is known for his strong defensive instincts and significant pace, and had been a key figure in Kilmarnock’s backline.”

The Scotsman, who was at one stage captain of Scott Gemmill’s U21s, will be adding some much-needed experience to an Aberdeen backline that shipped 55 goals last season. During his time at Kilmarnock Mayo’s highlights include being awarded Supporters Player of the Year in 2024 after helping them secure European football.

Mayo excited for Pittodrie atmosphere

Upon his Premiership switch, Mayo said: “I’m very happy to be here and can’t wait to get started. I know the manager is ambitious, as is everyone at the Club. When I spoke to the manager, I got a real good feel of what his plans are. There are clear plans in place here for how we can progress and I want to be a part of that.

“I am a versatile defender, these last few years I have played right across a back four and a back three, so I have experience of playing different positions which is something the manager recognises. There is always a great crowd and atmosphere at Pittodrie, and I’m looking forward to experiencing that as a home player. I am excited to get to work, and I am hopeful it is going to be a good season for us. Alongside the fans I’m sure we can have a really good time together.”

Manager Robinson added: "Lewis is a player we’ve admired for some time. He has shown real consistency and leadership qualities in this league, and he fits the profile of player we are looking to bring to the Club as we continue to build a competitive squad. We’re sure his experience and professionalism with be a great asset to the Club both on and off the pitch. Everyone at Aberdeen FC looks forward to welcoming Lewis to Pittodrie this summer.”
