Former Rangers star makes decision on future as director stunned to land player of ex Ibrox ace's calibre

The former Rangers man started out at Manchester United before featuring at the likes of Derby County.

An A-League club have hailed a contract extension for an ex Rangers player after he made a decision on his future.

Tom Lawrence was an emerging talent at Manchester United before stints with the likes of Derby County and Leicester City in England. He’d go on to feature for Rangers between 2022-2025, and while injuries were a factor, Lawrence proved a good option in various forward areas when fit.

Lawrence signed for Perth Glory last year after leaving Rangers but there was doubt over whether he’d extend his stay in Australia. He has now committed himself to a life down under for another two years.

Who does Tom Lawrence play for?

A club statement reads on the ex Rangers and Derby County man: “Perth Glory is delighted to confirm that Wales international forward Tom Lawrence has signed a two-year contract extension with the club. The 32-year-old scored five goals in 13 appearances after joining Glory ahead of the 2025/26 A-League campaign and also contributed two assists.

Lawrence began his career at Manchester United before going on to make more than 400 appearances for a number of prominent UK clubs, including Leicester City, Rangers, Ipswich Town, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County, scoring 78 goals in the process. At international level, meanwhile, after winning U17, U19 and U21 caps for Wales, he made his senior debut in 2015 and has accumulated a total of 23 appearances and three goals to date. During his most recent spell with Rangers, he scored twice in the Europa League and was part of the squad which reached four Scottish FA Cup and League Cup Finals.

“The versatile forward made his Glory debut in Round 3 against Melbourne Victory, scored his first ALM goal in Round 5 and claimed a stunning hat-trick in the Round 10 away win over Melbourne City en route to earning a share of the club’s Bobby Despotovski Golden Boot Award. In his 13 appearances in purple, Lawrence created 25 chances, had 45 touches in the opposition box and hit the target with 13 of his 34 shots. Further squad announcements will be made shortly.”

Why have Perth Glory resigned Tom Lawrence?

Glory Football Director Stan Lazaridis said he’s delighted to even have had the chance to sign the former Rangers and Derby County man. He said: “Tom has already shown that he is a match-winner and one of the very best players in the A-League. We were thrilled to sign a player of his calibre in the first place and the fact that he will now be with us for another two years is fantastic news for everyone associated with Perth Glory.

“Tom clearly believes that Glory is moving in the right direction as a club and wants to be part of the success that we are all striving for. I know our Members and fans will be extremely pleased that his time in purple is set to continue.”
