Rangers ace advised he 'has to leave' for new club as Celtic are fired Champions League warning
The latest Celtic and Rangers headlines ahead of this afternoon’s Scottish Premiership fixtures.
Celtic and Rangers both return to action today with a big afternoon at the top of the Scottish Premiership table ready to unfold. Philippe Clement’s side will host St Mirren while the Hoops travel to face Motherwell, hoping to keep up with Aberdeen, who banked another big three points to keep the pressure on the reigning champions.
Here’s a roundup of the latest news for the two sides ahead of their games today.
Rangers ace told to ‘go for good’
Ianis Hagi has been told to move on from Rangers, despite issues with his contract only recently being resolved. After making his return to the team, he looked to mark his comeback in superb style by adding an assist to his side’s win over St Johnstone but things came crashing down quickly.
Hagi was sent off, marring his return and now reports continue to swirl around his future. Fellow Romanian and former manager Dumitru Dumitriu has urged the player to seek a new opportunity elsewhere away from Ibrox.
Speaking to Romanian outlet Golazo, Dumitriu said: “I think he will get what he deserves in the end. He's a good player, a footballer who can play for several teams in Europe, so he doesn't have to stay there,” he told Golazo. “My belief is that he has to leave, but not on loan. To go for good, to be bought and used.
“When a club buys you, it shows that they trust you. And Ianis needs that. He is a talented player who gives himself, passes well with both feet, shoots hard. He has many qualities, he is a top footballer. But he had this bad luck with the injury.”
Celtic given Champions League warning
Celtic have had a mixed start to their Champions League campaign so far, with one win, one draw and one defeat on the board. After their dominant opening win against Slovan Bratislava, the Hoops were hammered 7-1 by Dortmund, before a 0-0 draw with Atalanta last time out.
Celtic’s next challenge will be RB Leipzig at home, who are yet to pick up a single point in their campaign so far. However, Chris Sutton has advised Brendan Rodgers’ side not to take that statistic for granted.
“Don’t be fooled by the fact the Germans have no points. They still possess top talent and caused Liverpool all sorts of problems in the early stages of their match in midweek with their own aggressive press,” Sutton wrote in his latest Daily Record column.
“Arne Slot’s team were caught on occasions and got away with not being punished. Rodgers will look closely at that. Of course, there is more onus to go for it at home, but, while expansive and excellent against Slovan Bratislava, it may need dialled-down for Leipzig.”
