Rangers identify potential James Tavernier replacement as 'emerging talent' touted to fill captain's void

The captain left the club at the end of the season after 11 years at Ibrox

Rangers have reportedly found a replacement for club icon James Tavernier in the form of Hammarby IF right back Hampus Skoglund.

The 22-year old came through the ranks at his native Swedish side and so far has made 64 appearances in the Allsvenskan. Having signed a new deal with Hammarby last year, Skoglund is contracted there until 2030, however they would be willing to sell the defender if the price is right. Rangers, along with German outfit FC Schalke have both expressed an interest.

Manager Danny Rohl will have a task on his hands replacing the numbers of his old skipper Tavernier, who scored 144 goals in 565 appearances during his 11 years in Govan. The Englishman said his goodbyes to Ibrox in the final home game of the season against Hibs in bizarre circumstances after a dispute between player and manager. With the Rangers boss planning a summer rebuild, one of the first ports of call must be to replace the 34-year old.

‘Emerging talent’ identified as potential Tavernier replacement

According to Football Insider: “Rangers are targeting a move for Hammarby defender Hampus Skoglund as they look to replace the presence of James Tavernier. Skoglund is an emerging talent in Sweden, having already made a number of appearances for the international Under-21s. His breakthrough for Hammarby came in the 2023-24 season, and he has proved to be a key player in the seasons since.”

Not only will Rangers be tasked with replacing Tavernier’s numbers as well but also his leadership qualities, as Rohl will have to appoint a new captain for the 2026/27. While Skoglund may lack experience, in a single Allsvenskan game this season he provided a hat trick of assists from right back.

Tavernier farewell message

Tavernier served Rangers for over a decade, where he won a Premiership title, Scottish Cup, League Cup and helped them to a European final. After was told he wasn’t going to start his final match at Ibrox, a disagreement ensued between the captain and Rohl as he in turn, wasn’t allowed to feature on the pitch. The defender did however take to Instagram to thank the club and the fans for the support they’ve given him.

He said: "I firmly believe the situation could and should have been handled much better from all sides. A lack of communication allowed matters to escalate unnecessarily in the build up to such an emotional occasion for myself and my family. However, I want to make clear that no individual is ever bigger than this great football club. Rangers must always come first. I hope the fans continue to stand united behind the team and the club moving forward. Thank you for everything."
