Rangers-linked international destined to be 'real star' breaks cover on long-standing Ibrox transfer rumours
Sheffield Wednesday are expected to cash in on prized asset following their relegation from the EFL Championship
Rangers-linked goalkeeper Pierce Charles has opened up on his future at Sheffield Wednesday as he prepares to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Hillsborough.
The 11-times capped Northern Ireland international is on a list of potential signing targets for Light Blues boss Danny Rohl this summer amid uncertainty surrounding who will be the club’s first-choice shot-stopper next season.
Current Ibrox No.1 Jack Butland is under contract for another year but has previously attracted interest and could make way for a new signing, while back-up Liam Kelly has been tied down on a new deal but is unlikely to start games on a regular basis.
A decision will need to be made on Butland’s position before there is any movement in the goalkeeping department, but it would not come as a shock if the former Manchester United, Stoke City and Crystal Palace man was moved on.
That could open the door for Rangers to swoop for one of the most highly-rated young keepers currently playing in England. Charles worked under Rohl with the Owls last season, and is viewed as one of their top assets for the cash-strapped Yorkshire club.
Coming off an injury-plagued season, in-demand Charles indicated he will not rush into any decision on his future. Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph while away on international duty, he said: “I’m not really focusing on that. After the ten days in camp working I’ll focus on resting and enjoying the summer.
“You never know what might happen. We’ll see what happens when it comes to it.”
Charles destined to become a ‘real star’
Charles’ comments come after he was informed about what it will take to reach the highest level by former Northern Irish stalwart Michael McGovern, who has been keeping a watchful eye on the keeper’s development.
Wednesday are expected to cash in on Charles following their relegation from the EFL Championship. He has also been linked with a return to first club Manchester City where he began his career in the youth system, as a potential replacement for exit-linked James Trafford.
McGovern said: “I have watched Pierce a good bit and I see so much potential in him. He can be a real star and you can see that despite his young age. I’m sure there is interest in him.”
