Rangers 'open door' to Premiership rivals eyeing deal for summer signing who hasn't started a game in five months

The midfielder moved to Ibrox from Dundee last summer but has found regular minutes hard to come by under Danny Rohl

The January transfer window has passed the midway point with Rangers bringing in two new signings with a third on the brink of completion in the shape of Danish winger Andreas Skov Olsen.

In order to bring in more recruits, head coach Danny Rohl knows he must shift some players who aren’t contributing on in the opposite direction in order to free up wages.

And one player who could soon be on the move is former Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron, with the Light Blues in advanced talks with fierce Premiership rivals Aberdeen over a loan deal for the midfielder.

The Dons reportedly tried to land the 23-year-old just 12 months ago before Cameron decided to sign a pre-contract with Rangers that saw him quit Dens Park for Ibrox last summer.

He arrived under previous boss Russell Martin, but has barely featured under Rohl in recent months and has since been made available on a temporary basis this month.

Managerless Aberdeen line up Lyall Cameron loan deal

That has alerted the managerless North East side who are working hard to strike and agreement with Rangers, who have still to shake on a compensation package with Dundee which is likely going to require a tribunal with neither club able to settle on a fee.

Aberdeen are without a permanent boss after sacking Jimmy Thelin earlier this month, with Peter Leven put in interim charge. The Dons are looking to sign a couple of players before kick-starting their Scottish Cup defence at home to Raith Rovers on Sunday.

And they hope to get a deal for experienced top-flight campaigner Cameron over the line in time for kick-off.

Rohl stated publicly that Rangers were exploring loan exit options for Cameron in this window, with the player not starting a competitive match since August and being regularly left out of the matchday squad.

The German boss said: “Yeah, we are in the process, we work on this. I cannot tell who is in the squad by the end of the window, i think especially with young players it’s about getting minutes and development, and then we have to make good decision, what is the best for some players.

“It makes no sense to keep them and they get no minutes. I think this is crucial. For me it’s always about performance on the pitch during the game, but also during the week, how is the training performance to get minutes. You see at the moment it’s not easy to come in the squad.”
