Rangers target former Birmingham City and West Ham United star in late transfer swoop as 'talks could evolve'

Premiership rival is ‘looking for a departure’ from current club

Rangers are targeting former Birmingham City and West Ham defender Emmanuel Longelo in a late transfer window swoop as he reportedly looks to leave current club Motherwell.

The 25-year old Englishman was a thorn in the side of Rangers last season, scoring three goals against them from left back - including a last minute winner at Ibrox in April. As the Scottish transfer market near it’s closure on Thursday, Longelo has been linked with a move to Govan. He is under contract in Lanarkshire until the end of the season.

Known for his energy up and down the left flank, the defender was a fan favourite at Fir Park last season, finding the net nine times in 44 appearances. He signed for the Steelmen at the start of last season from EFL side Birmingham City after a brief loan spell at Cambridge United. Before that, he came through the ranks at English giants West Ham.

Rangers target Longelo move amid late transfer window swoop

According to transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri: “Emmanuel Longelo's Motherwell FC looking for a departure in the last days of the transfer window. The English's considered as one of the main options for Rangers FC at the left back position. Talks could evolve in the next days.”

Longelo helped the Well to a European finish last season under former boss Jens Berthel Askou. With new gaffer Alfred Johansson now in charge, his role in the team remains very similar. His attacking threat was further highlighted in their UEFA Conference League play-off clash against Europa League finalists Freiburg. The left back was on target in their 4-1 defeat away to the Germans.

Where would Longelo fit in to the Rangers team?

Rangers are already fairly well stacked at left back with January addition Tuur Rommens and summer signing James Penrice the current options in this area. Both players have proven their worth on separate occasions and will be fighting it out to be first choice once Rommens returns from his groin injury. Longelo would be a player with a similar pedigree to the Rangers duo, however knocking both of their pedestal would be a tough task. Given his goal record, the defender could also perhaps be deployed further up the pitch.

Last season, Askou was a big admirer of Longelo’s from the moment he arrive and scored against Rangers in their Premiership opener. After he signed the Englishman, he said: "We have been looking to add competition in the left-back position. And Manny brings exactly what we need - breakthrough power, strength, speed and athleticism down our left side.”
