Returning injured Rangers star goes hot on the recovery trail as he's spotted training in Spain camp

Danny Rohl has taken his team to La Manga during their week off

Rangers defender Tuur Rommens has been spotted training with the squad at their warm-weather camp in Spain, as the left-back nears his return from a quad injury.

While Danny Rohl confirmed straight away the defender’s knock wouldn’t be a long-term issue, Rommens missed Rangers’ recent outings against Dundee United and Falkirk as Brentford loanee, Jayden Meghoma stepped in at left-back. While Rangers have coped without the Belgian, gaining maximum points from both matches, having Rommens back and available for selection is a huge boost for boss Rohl going into the split. The 23-year old has been a consistent performer at ful-lback since signing from Westerlo in January for around £4.3m.

Having been knocked out the Scottish Cup by Celtic last month, Rangers are taking full advantage of the fact they’re out of action this semi final weekend, as Rohl and co are currently at a warm-weather training camp in Spain. The Light Blues boss is hoping it can help his players recover physically and mentally from the intense Scottish title race. Rangers currently sit one point behind leader Hearts and two clear of Celtic in the standing.

Rommens spotted in training at La Manga

Rangers posted on Instagram some snapshots of their players and staff in the sunshine, with a big team photo at the end, where Rommens was seen arm-in-arm with countryman, Nico Raskin. Rohl mentioned through the week that his recovery so far has been ‘very successful’.

On the training camp itself, Rohl added: "It’s good to have the group together, the players together. To have a little bit of time for recovery, but also to work on some small details. It’s also good to refresh the mind. I see a lot of benefits. I will have time with the board to speak about topics for the future. This is also nice to have, and I think it goes in a good direction. The players should do something together as well. This is crucial. Then we come back and focus on the split."

How big a part could Tuur Rommens play in the title race?

Meghoma has performed when called upon, which was fairly frequent at the start of the season, due to Rangers’ lack of depth in this area. However, Rommens has stepped it up a gear, and hasn’t looked back since making the position his own. From defence to attack, he’s been praised by his manager for his endless work-rate on the left flank. So far he’s already pitched in with four goal contributions in his 10 appearances.

Having captained the Belgian under-21 National Team, Rommens has an ideal blend of leadership qualities mixed with future potential. Of the January signings, he perhaps went under the radar at the time due to the additions of Tochi Chukwuani and Andreas Skov Olsen, but has arguably started the brightest out of them all. Next up for the Gers on their return from Spain is Motherwell at home next weekend. Rohl will be hoping the defender can get back up to match sharpness for the first of five cup finals.
