Rangers have competition from the former England star this transfer window.

Rangers could have competition from Wayne Rooney if they want to sign a summer target.

It’s been reported that the Light Blues are after Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron. The Scotland youth international is out of contract at Aberdeen and could walk a similar path to Ryan Jack and Scott Wright, who have both swapped Pittodrie for Ibrox in recent times.

According to the Daily Record, Swansea City, Cardiff City and Stoke City have all put proposals on the table. Former England, Everton and Man Utd star Rooney may also have his say on whether or not Rangers get their man, as he wants him at Plymouth after being named head coach, according to the report.

Hellas Verona and Bologna in Serie A also have some interest, but Rangers have made a ‘strong’ offer. Barron can move outside of Scotland for around £500,000 in training compensation, whereas Rangers would need to agree a fee with the Dons or risk a tribunal.

Speaking on Go Radio, former Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson wasn’t sure whether or not the midfield star strengthen what was already at the club. He said: “I think he’s a good young player, is he going to really strengthen the Rangers midfield?

“It’s difficult when you play for a team like Aberdeen and you come with the pressure and the amount of stuff that is on your shoulders, the demands and expectations.

"He’s a good player, at the price I would probably go and take a chance on him because when I’ve seen Aberdeen, he’s certainly impressed me. But, it is a whole different ball game when you go to Rangers.”
