Rob Roy boss hails fans for backing home and away

Rob Roy boss Stewart Maxwell this week hailed the club’s supporters for playing a key role in his side’s superb start to the season.

Following last season’s promotion the Kirkintilloch outfit have stormed to the top of the Super League Premier Division.

They did lose pole position to Pollok last Saturday, but had the ‘consolation’ of booking a place in the last 16 of the West of Scotland Cup with a fine 4-1 win away to fellow Super League side Troon.

And Maxwell said the sizeable Rabs support who travelled to Troon - and who have turned out for other matches - had played their part.

He said: “The players really appreciate the backing they have been getting from the fans. They have all commented on it.

“It’s not just home games, we’re taking a terrific support to away matches as well and there’s no doubt it’s helping to inspire the players.”

Rabs have a free weekend this Saturday - a consequence of the one blip on their season in the Scottish Junior Cup when they were on the wrong end of a second round upset, and a 3-0 beating, at the hands of Wishaw.

With the third round taking place on Saturday Rob Roy have no game, but they do have a last 16 match in the West to look forward to later in the season after their excellent performance at Troon.

Maxwell admitted: “We told the players beforehand that the West Cup was massive for us because we are out of the Scottish and they responded really well.

“The first half was as good a 45 minutes as we have played this season.

“It’s a fantastic playing surface at Troon and it really suited us. They are a really good side but our passing was excellent and we controlled the tempo of the game.

“But as sometimes happens they got a goal with a shot into the top corner, but we responded really well.

“We got a great equaliser from Willie Sawyers before half-time and in the second half I thought we had the better chances.”

But with time running out the Rabs boss then made what proved a match winning substitution, sending on striker Stevie Aitken who, within 30 seconds, hammered home a stunning volley to put his side in front and then added another goal shortly afterwards before Sawyers completed the scoring.

Maxwell agreed the substitution couldn’t have worked out better, adding: “Stevie has been a bit down because he hasn’t had a chance as Kevin Watt and Willie Sawyers have been doing so well for us.

“But I told him that if he wasn’t a good player he wouldn’t be here and I’m sure Saturday’s goals will do wonders for his confidence.”
