Rob Roy cup hopes go West with Clydebank KO

Rob Roy went out of the West of Scotland Cup to Clydebank.

In a lively start, Chris Duff saw his well struck free-kick deflected for a corner then at the other end Steven Young’s effort was parried around the post by Rabs ’keeper Jonathan Murdoch.

In the 16th minute the visitors went in front when an error in the Rabs defence allowed the ball to break into the penalty box where David Barr’s clearance hit Young’s foot with the ball trundling into the net.

Six minutes later Rabs were given the chance to equal matters when Willie Sawyers was pushed as he advanced into the penalty box,

Referee Wilson pointed to the spot and after the protests died down Ross Barbour stepped forward to take the kick only to see ’keeper Josh Lumsden smartly dive to his left to push the ball past the post, as Rob Roy’s penalty jinx continued.

However two minutes later Rabs levelled the score when Gavin Mackie’s free-kick from distance was headed low into Lumsden’s net by Duff.

Both sides had chances to snatch the lead in an entertaining first half.

But in stoppage time it was Clydebank who went in front when full back Andrew Paterson send over a high curling shot from the left and Murdoch seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball with the ball sailing into the net.

The first chance of the second half fell to Rabs but Sawyers shot lacked power and was easily taken by Lumsden.

Then, in the 57th minute, Bankies were awarded a penalty kick when Danny Boyle tripped Young in the box. Nicky Little took the kick and gave Murdoch no chance with his well-placed spot-kick.

Bankies winger Mark Burbridge was causing Rabs defence no end of trouble with his speed and delivery and from his clever play he set up Phillip Barclay who had his attempt at goal blocked.

Barbour had a chance for Rabs but he shot directly at Lumsden before his opposite number Murdoch did well to push a stinging volley from Barclay wide.

Rob Roy suffered an injury blow when Boyle limped off with a recurrence of his hamstring injury and as Rabs had committed all three substitutes they were forced to play the final eight minutes with 10 men.

The home side made a late rally but were unable to break down a well organised Bankies defence and it was Clydebank who could have added to their tally but substitute Joel Kasubandi sent his drive inches past the post.
