Transfer deadline day 2022: All the latest Rangers and Celtic transfer news

Walker shocked by no late Gers business

Andy Walker has been left shocked by Rangers lack of deadline day transfer activity.

The former Celtic striker and Sky Sports pundit pointed to Glen Kamara’s possible departure to French club Nice as a major issue for Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football show, Walker said: “I’m amazed they haven’t brought anyone in.

“If Kamara goes and they don’t bring anyone, I just think that would be an extraordinary transfer window.

“I know they have brought Soutter in during January and he’s still to play, they’ve got Davies, already got Helander who is maybe injured, but they’re all the same position.

“I’m sure Van Bronckhorst would be looking for another striker. I don’t know where Alfredo Morelos’ head is at, and maybe another midfield player.

“I’m just surprised at the way they’re handling the situation with Ryan Kent. I know he can still choose to sign for Rangers again, to extend his contract but he can also walk away in a number of months for absolutely nothing.

“You need a deeper squad for the challenges that lie ahead, at home and abroad.

“Celtic have got their business done early, they knew they were part of the Champions League group stages.”

Billy Gilmour’s permanent switch to Brighton & Hove Albion could land Rangers a tasty transfer windfall.

The Scotland international, who spent last season on loan at Norwich City, has agreed to leave Chelsea after failing to break into Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans.

He’s currently on the verge of finalising his exit from Stamford Bridge to join their Premier League rivals at the Amex Stadium.

Greek giants Olympiakos had enquired about a potential loan deal, but Chelsea would rather sell the player.

Various reports have suggested a 15 per cent sell-on clause was inserted into the deal when Gilmour left the Ibrox youth system in 2017.

Brighton are expected to pay a fee in the region of £9million for the all-action midfielder, which could mean the Gers net close to £1.5m as part of the move.

Katic breaks silence on Ibrox exit

Nikola Katic has taken to social media to pen an emotional farewell message to the Rangers fans after joining FC Zurich on a permanent basis.

The Croatian defender was a first-team regular under former boss Steven Gerrard before sustaining a serious knee injury which hampered his progress.

He wrote on Instagram: “I don’t even know how to begin to say goodbye, but I will do my best...

“From the first time I walked out on the pitch and heard Tina Turner’s Simply The Best, I knew this was something big. What a club!

“There are no words to describe the size of Glasgow Rangers, you just need to feel that to understand what I am talking about. There are also no words to express my love for every part of the club.

“Since I arrived four years ago, the love and support I received from the fans was unreal. We shared a lot of good and bad moments, from the wins in big games to the bad injury and the long road to recover.

“All the ups and downs but the support was always amazing. Althought I’m a very emotional person, I always manage to control my emotions and stay calm.

“But yesterday once it became official that I was leaving and I started to receive messages and phone calls from many friends I made here, I started to cry like a baby.

“I just couldn’t help myself. That club shaped me into the man I am today and I am extremely proud of every experience I had there.

“The show must go on, that’s life. No-one apart from God knows how things will go in my career but I can always say I played for one of the biggest clubs in the world and helped Famous Glasgow Rangers to be back where they belong.

“From the bottom of my hearts, I would like to say a Massive Thank You to both managers, their staff, all my teammates I shared the dressing room with, every employee at the training ground and Ibrox, and to every single fan who made the journey unforgettable.

“It’s definitely not a final goodbye - I will continue to follow and support the club, and I will definitely be back! With love, your Niko.”

Former Celtic winger Marian Shved will return to Parkhead in the Champions League this season after signing a five-year-deal with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The 25-year-old endured a frustrating spell in Glasgow after joining from Karpaty Lviv in January 2019.

He made just two first-team appearances under Neil Lennon’s reign before sealing a permanent exit to Belgian club KV Mechelen last year.

Shved will now line-up against his previous employers on European football’s biggest stage next month.

Sadiq joins La Liga outfit

Ex-Rangers flop Umar Sadiq has completed a sensational £22.4million move to Real Sociedad - four years on from an ill-fated loan spell at Ibrox.

The Nigerian striker has revitalised his career after a calamitous six-month stint under Steven Gerrard in 2018, where he failed to score in four appearances.

Sadiq has spent the past two seasons with Almeria in Spain, netting a prolific 43 times and providing 19 assists in 84 appearances.

The 25-year-old’s form in front of goal has prompted the La Liga side to splash out on the former Roma star in a packaged deal worth around €20m plus €6m add-ons.

It looks like Rangers star Glen Kamara will be staying at Ibrox after Ligue 1 side OGC Nice reportedly turned their focus away from the midfielder.

The French club were understood to be willing to pay up to £10million for the Finland international but after failing to make any inroads in negotiations, Nice have shifted their attention towards other targets.

According to French football journalist Sacha Tavolieri, free agent Ross Barkley is a name that features high on their radar, with manager Lucien Favre still in the mark for a central midfield option.

The former Everton academy graduate is free to join a club outside of the window after leaving Chelsea on a permanent basis.

Nicolas Raskin was reportedly close to joining Rangers if Glen Kamara had been sold to OGC Nice.

The Standard Liege midfielder has been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent weeks and sporting director Ross Wilson had prepared a four-year contract offer for the 21-year-old.

The Belgian outfit expected to complete business with last season’s Europa League finalists earlier today but no paperwork was tabled.

Any potential deal hinged on Kamara’s future amid interest from Nice and with that move now dead, Raskin will now assess other options with his contract ending next summer.

English League One side Morecambe have signed Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old, a product of Sheffield Wednesday’s youth academy, joined the Hoops last summer on a long-term deal but has struggled for game time under Ange Postecoglou.

Shaw made his debut for the Parkhead club in a dead-rubber Europa League group stage victory over Real Betis last year before spending the remainder of the 2021/22 season on loan at Motherwell.

He will now return to England and link up with Derek Adams’ Shimps, who have failed to win any of their opening six league matches.

Abildgaard bids Kazan farewell

Imminent Celtic arrival Oliver Abildgaard has bid farewell to parent club Rubin Kazan ahead of sealing his loan move.

The Danish international touched down in Glasgow this afternoon after passing his medical yesterday and an official announcement to confirm his signing is expected by the Hoops media team in the final hour of the window.

He wrote on Instagram: “I will be forever grateful to @fcrk for my time in Kazan. I made lifetime friends and shared more fond memories than I could ever imagine.

“Thank you to the fans, staff and everyone connected to the club. You will all have a special place in my hearts.

“Finally a huge thanks to @leonid.slutsky who made me the player that I am today.”

Rangers midfielder Stephen Kelly has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Premiership rivals Livingston for a nominal fee.

Lions manager Davie Martindale has beaten off competition from various clubs to land the Scotland under-21 international.

Kelly has been allowed to leave Ibrox on a permanent basis after being informed he is not part of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s plans going forward.

Following successful loan spells at Ayr United, Ross County and Salford City, the highly-rated youngster will now ply his trade at the Tony Macaroni Arena until 2025.
