United progressed into the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup at Guy’s Meadow on Saturday against a stuffy Maybole side.

The Ayrshire team, with few changes from the first game, were a much improved outfit in this replay and made the Cumbernauld boys fight all the way for victory.

United were two goals up midway through the second half and should have been much further ahead but for poor finishing. A Maybole goal minutes from time meant a tense finale but fortunately the United players saw out the remaining seconds to prevent the tie going to penalties.

With Scott Upton suspended Jim Steele came into the midfield in an otherwise unchanged team.

The referee from the first match at Maybole was again in charge of the tie and the very fussy official, before the game, seemed concerned about the weather conditions. Thankfully he gave the match the go ahead.
