Stunning win for Kirkintilloch team over Airdrie Utd

HOPES are high for a super season for Rob Roy after the junior team beat first division side Airdrie Utd 4-3 at the Excelsior Stadium.

Monday’s away win for Jimmy Lindsay’s men made it five successive pre-season victories.

Last Wednesday saw Rabs thrill their home fans with a 4-3 win over Bellshill Athletic before they hopped on the team bus for a weekend in Aberdeen.

Friday saw them run out 1-0 winners against Banks of Dee, before taking on Stonehaven the next day and claiming an impressive 3-1 win.

Gaffer Jimmy Lindsay told the Herald: “We’re trying to get everybody game time and it’s been good to get some wins - particularly when the wheels came off a wee bit and the boys showed spirit to come back. I was really pleased with their attitude.

“I should also say thanks to all the fans - both ours and the guys from Aberdeen - who turned out to watch us on Saturday. It gave the boys a tremendous lift to play in front of such a passionate crowd.”

Sadly the winning run of games came to a halt 24 hours after the Airdrie match – with Rabs beaten 3-1 away to Camelon Juniors – but it has still been an excellent pre-season.

Lindsay added: “We’ve still got a few new signings to play - including Kevin Bradley who signed from Pollok who will hopefully play in our next couple of games.

“I’m happy to say that we are currently injury-free so it would be great to keep it like that through the early stages of the season.

“We signed a goalie recently but he’s decided he can’t do the travelling so we’re back to stage one which is a bit frustrating.”

This Saturday Rabs will be on the move once more to take on Blackburn United at Murrayfield Park in their last pre-season friendly, with a kick-off scheduled for 2.30pm.

Then, on Monday at 6.45pm, the season begins in earnest with a home tie against Cumbernauld United in the Sectional League Cup.

Lindsay said: “Once again we’re playing the local teams at the start of the season. We did well last year to get out of our group in the Cup and we’ll be looking to do the same again and hopefully progress further.

“It sometimes takes a bit of time for the new players to gel but I’m hoping to hit the ground running.”
