The champs win... again

And along the way, City notched up yet another domestic win when they hit Hibernian with a 3-1 defeat at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie.

Down to goals by Jo Love, Fiona Brown and Denise O’Sullivan, City had the game more or less wrapped by half time.

City got off to a perfect start as Jo Love secured the first goal of the game after collecting a Fiona Brown cross after just three minutes.

The clock hadn’t even hit 15 minutes when Brown scored for herself: a pass from fellow striker Abbi Grant to put City into a comfortable lead.

Hannah Reid in the Hibbee goal had to look alert as she acrobatically tipped an expertly-hit Susan Fairlie long shot over the crossbar which was followed by Brown hitting the side netting as Hibernian struggled to cope with their hosts in the opening half hour.

City’s third goal came from some great team play and some good footwork from Fiona Brown as she neatly set up Denise O’Sullivan who calmy slotted past Reid to bring City an easy three-goal cushion before the break.

The second half brought a few changes, most notably giving first team debuts to under 17 players Maxine Walsh and Marianne MacDonald, with young Kodie Hay also coming on to replace Denise O’Sullivan on the 60th minute mark.

There was some joy for Hibernian who didn’t go away empty handed as a Katey Turner header managed to save face for the team.

Head coach, Eddie Wolecki Black, said: “I asked the players to play at a really high tempo from the start today and I felt we did that and it really set the tone of the whole game for us.

“It was pleasing to see us get early goals and pretty much kill the game at half time and allow us to see the result out.

“I felt we did that in the second half.

“We were disappointed to lose the goal, of course we are, but when ou are start making a number of changes, it doesn’t matter who they are, it affects the flow and balance of the game.

“However, overall I am dedlighted with the performance and the three points.”

Disappointment soured domestic success, however, as City crashed to a 2-0 defeat against Polish cracks Medyk Konin. Two second-half goals by Ewa Prior and Alexandria Sikora dealt out heartache for the City side.

Eddie Wolecki Black commented: “We certainly never performed and in football, especially at Champions League level, you need to perform.

“We had chances but unfortunately we never too them when they came along.

“The first goal is very disapointing as when there are multiple errors it will end in the up in the back of your net, and that is what happened.

“The second one was one of those things that happen: the girl has went to cross it and it has gone in off the back post.

“However if we needed motivation to turn this around, we just need to look at their celebrations at the final whistle.

“The crown was the twelth players for them tonight without a doubt and I hope we can get the same numbers and noise behind us next week as it really does make a difference.”

Glasgow City take on Medyk Konin in the return leg on Wednesday, October 15 at the Excelsior Stadium. Kick off is at 7.30pm.
