Vale of Leven 3-0 Thorniewood United: Three straight reds for 'Wood players in cup defeat

Thorniewood United’s South Challenge Cup run was ended in controversial circumstances at the fourth-round stage when they were defeated 3-0 at Vale of Leven on Saturday.

Referee Ross Clark showed straight red cards to three of the Viewpark team’s players, much to the chagrin of ’Wood secretary Eddie Lynas.

"In all my years involved in football, I have never seen such a poor standard of refereeing as from the referee on Saturday and his two assistants,” Lynas said.

"I take nothing away from Vale of Leven. We had a bad day at the office getting reduced to eight men, but they deserved their win. They took their chances.”

’Wood skipper Ross Gillan was shown a straight red card in the first half for handling a goal-bound shot, conceding a penalty which was scored to put Vale 1-0 up at half-time.

The visitors went 2-0 down when a Vale corner was headed home before ’Wood were reduced to nine men when Dillon McLaughlan was dismissed for a foul.

"That one was a yellow card at the most,” Lynas said.

Ciaran Reilly then got sent off after being adjudged to have kicked an opposition player lying on the ground – a claim which Lynas disputed – before Leven added a late third.
