Vale were as tough opponents as Blackies have met this season because of the gap in the league between the sides.

As often happens the visitors made Watch go right to the last kick of the 90 minutes to secure a tremendous victory.

Blackies could not have asked for a better start, going ahead in the fourth minute from an O’Connor pass to Aitken.

The striker passed on the right to McIlroy out wide, the ball went to Cairney whose cross to the back post saw Nicky Prentice go past full back Lindsay to slam the ball past keeper Brand.

This might have been the opportunity Watch needed to take control, but Vale never gave them the chance with their determined attacks.

Watch’s defenders were outstanding as the visitors – from free kicks, corners and long throws into the box – saw Campsie keep them out.

Blackies could not go further ahead despite having most of the possession.

They were punished in the 23rd minute when a Campsie attack broke down, Vale quickly raced to the other end and when a Hendry strike from 25 yards hit the post striker Hewitt was on the spot to net.

All square at the interval and without doubt Black Watch players knew they were in a classic cup tie.

Watch went 2-1 in front in the 50th minute.

From a Meechan pass Prentice raced for goal only to be pulled down in the box by defender Stevenson, McIlroy scored from the spot.

This was the goal Watch needed as fitness now began to turn in their favour.

Steven Aitken made it 3-1 in the 60th minute with a brilliantly headed goal.

Clever play on the left from Meechan to Cairney onto Prentice whose cross saw Aitken with a flying header turn the ball into the net past keeper Brand.

This did not make it easier for Watch as the visitors battled to the end and scored in the 88th minute when Hendry’s free kick from 25 yards hit the back of the net.

Not to be outdone, from the kick off McGeough’s ball through the middle to Logan saw the striker pulled down 25 yards out.

Up stepped Declan Cairney to drive the ball into the net to give Watch a well deserved victory.

This was teamwork from Blackies that saw every player work hard to take the club to the next round.

Watch play Baillieston in the Golden Goal Trophy on Saturday at Station Road with a 2pm kick off.

Tote numbers for Saturday were 17 and 14. There was no winner, £450 next week.
