THIS was a great away win for Shire Villa in atrocious weather on Sunday afternoon. Villa started well and played some great football into the strong wind. They scored first when Moore’s in-swinging corner was flicked on at the near post by Thomson for McDonald to score with a neat left-foot finish.

The home side then pushed on and pinned Villa back, aided by the wind. Villa keeper Easdon produced a marvellous double save when he dived full length to stop an initial shot then somehow got back up to block the rebound effort from six yards out.

Shire Villa scored twice within a matter of minutes before the break. First Florence rose to powerfully head home Moore’s free-kick, then McLintock scored when set up by Kenny.

The second half started with Villa now with the wind at their backs hence they began to dominate. They scored two further goals, both by Moore, with shots from 25 yards into the bottom left hand corner of the net – completing a fine day for Shire Villa.

LENZIE have now collected enough points to ensure they will be playing in the league first division next season.

The first half of the game was a bit frantic as both teams needed points and the strong wind and bumpy pitch did not make it easy – with the ball in the air a lot. Very few chances were created with the score at the break 0-0.

What a transformation in the second period as Lenzie got the ball down and started to make passes. They opened the scoring after a delightful bit of play between Ross O’Hare and Conor Mclaughlin got the flying winger through to finish well.

Lenzie’s lead did not last long. A ball into the box was not cleared properly and the score was equal again.

However, Lenzie quickly got in front again. Conor McLaughlin, who was running riot on the right, slotted the ball in to Ross O’Hare, who flicked the ball home.

Lenzie were now well on top and two great strikes from Anton Phinn gave them a 4-1 lead.

However, Celtic kept pegging away and got a goal back. Lenzie then sealed the points with another well-worked finish by Corey Irvine.

Referee’s player was Conor McLaughlin who was absolutely excellent on the right.

Rossvale Inter 1999s lift the Blackpool Cup

AFTER their disappointment of a Regional Cup semi-final defeat on penalties the previous week, Inter went to Blackpool determined to defend the cup they won the previous year. In opposition this year were Leith BC, Forfar BC, Blantyre blues, Blantyre yellows and Carryduff from Northern Ireland.

Inter set out their stall to play their passing game and ran out winners of all their group games: 2-0 vs Carryduff, 2-0 vs Blantyre yellows, 2-0 vs Blantyre blues, 5-0 vs Leith and 3-0 vs Forfar.

Having topped the group Inter faced Carryduff – who proved stern opponents in the group game – in the final. Inter blew their Northen Irish opponents away with a resounding 4-0 win in the final. The boys performed fantastically well over the two days, winning every game, scoring 18 goals and not even conceding a goal, allowing skipper Kieran to lift the impressive cup.

To top off the weekend Inter also picked up the Fair Play award for the second year in a row, with the conduct of the boys, coaches and supporters recognised by the tournament organisers. It was a great display by all involved – well done boys.

* THE under-17 Boys’ Brigade footballers from the 268 Glasgow Company begin their defence of the Cathkin District under-17 cup against 278 Glasgow next Monday.

* Lenzie Youth Club have a vacancy for coaches to take the well-established 1998 side. The team play in the CKDYL and have been together since soccer 7s. Coaches with SFA Level 2 qualifications preferred, but keen football-minded people would be put through their badges by the club. Contact LYC head coach Billy Inglis on 07818 096752.

YOUNG Watch were poor throughout the first half with only a strike from Josh Hunter at goal to show for their poor work rate after going 1-0 down.

Watch got their act together in the second half only to lose a second goal through bad defending.

Watch came roaring back with Christian McKenna hitting the bar and bringing out some great saves from the Cumbernauld keeper before scoring the equaliser with a Mark Docherty cross into the box where he finished with a right foot strike.

Danny Hale struck the bar with a rasping shot and Tom Neil hit the post going for the winner before the final whistle blew.

Knockout Cup semi-final

WATCH went 1-0 up after a great run down the right from Josh Hunter and an inch perfect ball into the box for Christian McKenna to finish from close in.

Vale came back into the game and scored the equaliser.

Watch lost a second through poor defending before Christian McKenna scored the equaliser with a thunderous 25 yard free kick which he bent around the wall.

Watch pushed for the winner with a Jamie Petrie header skimming the bar and Ryan Clougherty missing from close in with a shot.

Vale were more hungrier to win this game and scored the winner with minutes to go.

Watch will need to give themselves a shake if they want to win any silverware this season with two cup finals and the league still to play for.
