Frankie Murphy wins Celtic Cup

CARLUKE'S own karate kid Frankie Murphy has once again struck gold — this time at the Celtic Cup.

The three day event, held in Brittany, saw Frankie and the rest of the Scottish men's side pick up a team gold while Frankie himself picked up a bronze medal in the open weight class.

The 21-year-old tee-totaller combines his training with working shifts in the town's Crown Inn pub.

"We faced teams from Brittany, Ireland and Wales over two days with the individual event on the Sunday,'' he said.

"The men managed to win the trophy and the girls got a silver so the pressure was off going into the third day.

"I was really pleased with what we achieved. A team gold, silver and two individual bronzes is a great weekend.

"The coach said our first objective was to get the team medals which we did and from then I decided to go for it.

"Because the pressure was off on the Sunday the team performed really well and we were a bit unlucky not to get more medals."

Frankie is now preparing for the British Championships at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh in September and the World Championships in Belgrade a month later.
