Games glory for ex-Para Scott

CUMBERNAULD rowing champ Scott Meenagh has won two silver medals at the first ever Invictus Games, staged in London.

The 25-year-old ex-paratrooper lost both legs to a terrorist explosive device while on active service in Afghanistan – but has since become a committed and successful sportsman, after getting involved through the Battle Back programme.

He put his name forward for his favourite event as soon as he heard about the Invictus Games, run by Jaguar Land Rover and championed by Prince Harry.

Scott – with a string of previous successes to his credit – made the most of the opportunity by powering to silver in the individual endurance and sprint IR4 events.

He said: “I had to compose myself and hold it together for the endurance event.

“I needed to hold back enough so I had a bit to give in the last minute and that’s where I pipped the opposition.

“You try to focus and block it out but when it gets really tough that’s where the crowd come into their own and carry you through the last minute.

Sport was a big part of my recovery and I got to try a lot of different sports through Battle Back but rowing is the one that has really stuck,” said Scott.

“I really enjoyed the competition and I’m very happy with two silver medals as that was where I was aiming to come.

The Invictus Games, presented by Jaguar Land Rover, are an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel with more than 400 competitors from 13 nations taking part in nine sports across four days in London.

And with the spotlight well and truly on the Games and using the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect of those who serve their country, Scott believes it is only just the start.
