Goalie George Wood in Clydesdale Sports Council Hall of Fame

FORMER Lanark Grammar School pupil George Wood, who later starred as a goalkeeper for Lanark United, Forth Wanderers, East Stirling, Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Cardiff City, has been inducted into the Clydesdale Sports Council Hall of Fame.

Sports council chairman Millar Stoddart met George in Blackpool last week, discovering that the four-time Scotland cap had actually starred as an outfield player during his early days in football with the Lanark Grammar team.

PE teacher and Forth resident, the late Duncan Blair, encouraged George to become a goalkeeper.

After playing 117 games for Blackpool, George earned a £150,000 move to Everton in 1977.

He was to play 103 games for the Goodison Park outfit before signing for Arsenal even although the Gunners had legendary Northern Ireland goalie Pat Jennings.

George is now the goalkeeping coach at Blackpool.
