GOLDEN GIRL

THERE was middle-distance track success for 17-year-old Kilsyth athlete, Karen Glover, when she went toe to toe with Eilish McColgan in the Scottish Universities Championships at the Indoor Athletics Arena in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow last week.

Despite this being Karen's first major championship race for two years, it was Karen, running for the University of Glasgow, who walked tallest after the race. She took the lead aggressively from the start of the under-20, 800m track final and comfortably won the race from McColgan with three seconds to spare.

Clearly it was a case of good things come to those who wait and for Karen, who runs for her club Falkirk Victoria Harriers, it was all worth the perseverance.

For this time, with 18 months of injury hell finally behind her, she displayed typical grit and determination to storm home and take gold and there was only going to be one winner on the day.

Having had a succession of injuries Karen has put together her first injury-free winter training schedule for two years and is looking to slice seconds off her personal best this year. Recent form suggests that she can look forward to an enjoyable year on the track.

Karen will now compete at the British Universities Championships in a top-level UK field at Bedford in May over three days and would like to thank her sponsors George Beattie and Hunter Demolition for their continuing support.
