Bearsden golfer plans to camp out on course for ambitious 26-round charity challenge

A Bearsden golfer is on course to play a staggering 26 rounds of the sport within five days in the hope of raising thousands of pounds for Beatson Cancer charity.

Nick Boyle (49) plans to camp out at Kingsfield Golf Centre at West Lothian for the Golfathon, which starts today (Monday, July 13).

The ambitious charity challenge will see sales director Nick play 94 holes per day, every day and his fundraising target is £5,000.

The local man is completing this challenge in honour of cancer patient Eric McMurray who received life-saving treatment at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in 2019.

Unfortunately, Eric’s cancer returned this year, and he sadly passed away during the height of lockdown.

Nick says he is determined to accomplish the 468 holes, which is approximately 63,360 steps equating to 30 miles per day.

He added: “The Arkley family who own and run Kingsfield golf course have been fantastic and I can’t thank them enough for helping me give this challenge a go-ahead.”

He added, “I’ve lined up some radio coverage and some ex-sporting celebrities to support me including my cousin Stephen Gallacher and Darren Gough. I am hoping this encouragement will help me smash by target.”

Nick is taking it to the next level by setting up a tent on the course and carrying around his own bag but would like some company around the course.

He said: “I’m hoping for the occasional visitor to pop by and maybe help to carry my bag to keep my spirits up.

“So far we’ve reached the £4,000 mark but hope to get to double our target and donate the total to Beatson Cancer Charity to go towards helping other patients facing cancer.”

Charlene Low, Beatson Cancer Charity’s Community Fundraising Manager, said: “This is a very ambitious and exciting challenge, and I’m sure Nick will complete it no problem.

“Let’s help reach the target, which will go towards supporting people affected by cancer and those close to them.”
