But that’s exactly what 16-year-old Cavan did at Palacerigg earlier this month, when his tee shot at the par three 8th ended up in the hole. The miracle shot certainly astonished Cavan’s opponents, none of whom had managed this feat in some 30 years of golf.
Chuffed Cavan, who plays off a 15 handicap, said afterwards: “It was really special, particularly in my first senior round.”
With Cavan too young to observe the usual ritual at the 19th hole, his dad John had to buy the customary round of drinks instead.
Cavan has been playing golf for three years, and has been trained by Palacerigg’s junior coaching programme. This training scheme, run by twelve volunteer coaches, is backed by North Lanarkshire Leisure’s Golf Development Group.
Club captain, junior convenor and Scottish Golf Union volunteer of the year Frank Anderson was delighted at Cavan’s success, particularly as he finished the round with a very nice score of 69 - three under par, which shows he is already capable of taking on the seniors at their own game.
