Five of six South Lanarkshire Council golf courses to reopen from this Friday

Just three weeks after fears six overgrown South Lanarkshire Council golf courses could close for good, five will reopen this Friday with social distancing.

A flood of interest is expected from golf starved folk from this Thursday, when the public can again book rounds at Hollandbush, Biggar, Torrance House, Langlands and Larkhall courses, which have been shut since mid March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Only Strathclyde Park golf course in Hamilton is remaining closed in the meantime amid reports that it is not in good enough condition.

“It’s a great relief that the courses are reopening again,” Hollandbush GC manager Mags Cathcart told the Carluke and Lanark Gazette.

“It’s been very stressful for me the last wee while.

“I’ve been at my work seven days a week.

“Not full days, but I’ve had something work related to deal with every day for seven days.

“I’ve been working constantly trying to communicate with my members.

“Over the weekend, the text messages I got from members asking questions about when the course was going to reopen were relentless.

“I’m going to need to tell the members to calm down and give me peace now!”

The courses reopening is a triumph for whistleblower Mags, who genuinely feared that the plug could be pulled on the six municipal layouts – which have a total of around 1000 members – before this newspaper highlighted their endangered plight as no greenkeeping staff worked on them for several weeks.

But those concerns are now a thing of the past as Scotland slowly eases out of Covid-19 lockdown and golfers can hopefully look forward to a long hot summer of action on the fairways.
