Golfers celebrate 35th in style

PALACERIGG Golf Club celebrated its 35th Anniversary at the weekend.

It was with true Palacerigg determination that the occasion went ahead at all with heavy snow closing the main Palacerigg road for most of the day and a problem with the heating system that was only rectified two hours before the dance started.

Fifty members and guests, a good turnout considering the conditions, danced the night away to popular female vocalist Donna Reilly from Dundee who supplied the excellent entertainment for the evening.

There was a moving minute's applause as the guests remembered the founder members, honorary members, past lady and gentlemen captains and the hundreds of members past and present who have preserved the club over the past 35 years. The present members were reminded of their own responsibility to preserve the traditions of Palacerigg Golf Club and pass on the baton to the next generation.

On a cold crisp evening there were whoops of delight as members released a number of multi coloured bio degradable sky lanterns which created a classic scene as they drifted across the golf course into the starry sky.

North Lanarkshire Leisure Trust were represented by Jim Moffat chief development officer, and Stephen Hogg, the new golf course manager, who were thanked for all their efforts in the development of golf in the area and the regeneration of the golf course over the past 12 months. The improvement in the facilities and condition of the golf course makes all members enthusiastic about the new season next year.

The evening was topped off in style when social convenor Finlay Petersen was presented with a cake and gift on the same day he celebrated his 75th birthday. In true style Finlay gave us his usual classic rendition of Spanish Eyes'.
