Good week for youngsters

It was a great week for the southside’s sporting youngsters.

Mearns teenager Andrew Mullen won a silver medal in the men’s 50m MC backstroke and placed fifth in the men’s 50m MC butterfly at the trials for Para-Olympic events at the British Gas Olympic swimming trials in London last week.

Although none of the three southside rugby clubs were in action, Hutchesons’ Grammar school pupil James Malcolm started at prop for Scotland under 18s, who fell to Wales at Braidholm on Sunday (12-19).

Meanwhile, Mearns Castle’s Laura McCracken won gold at the Scottish age group U18 athletics championships at Kelvin Hall in the women’s 60m.

Pollok fell victim to a last minute winner for Cumnock, who defeated the Newlandsfield side 3-2, while despite being down to 10 men when Neil Parry was red carded, Queen’s Park held on for a 1-1 draw at Elgin.

Glasgow City got the new 2012 season off with a bang with a resounding 10-0 victory over Kilmarnock in Ayrshire in the first round of the Premier League Cup.

In mens hockey, Clydesdale drew 3-3 with Western Wildcats while in the womens’ league, Giffnock defeated Edinburgh Uni 4-0 and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western were 2-1 winners against Grange.
