Fiona Trainer, from Scotia TKD, is hopeful that former Braidwood Primary and now Hamilton College pupil Gregor will do well, having already picked up a silver medal at the PUMA Championships last February.

She said: “Gregor has a number of national titles and has established himself as a strong competitor in the lightweight sparring category.

“This will be his second tournament at the highest international level and he is looking forward to facing the world’s top fighters on the mats.

“Gregor started taekwon-do as a hobby as a young boy and has taken advantage of all the development opportunities available and travelled around the country and abroad, aiming to be able to get to this level.

“At such a young age, he has a lot of potential to make his mark internationally.”

Gregor will have a familiar coach in his corner as Scotia founder and head coach David Condie is also the Scotland head sparring coach and is very excited to take another of his charges - who has been training after school since he was six - to compete at the highest level.

Fellow Scotia star Alex Marshall has also travelled to the World Championships and is part of Scotland’s junior patterns team.

The talented 14-year-old has been training as part of the Scotia team for the best part of a decade and made it into the Scotland patterns squad last year.

Excited Alex, who is also from Carluke, can’t wait for her first major international competition to kick off.

She said: “Recently I have been training every weekend in Aberdeen with Mr Boydell and the rest of the girls from the junior patterns team.

“I feel I am well prepared but I’m nervous about taking part in my first major international competition.”
