Gunner Jack romps to victory at Overton

THE tongue-in-cheek ‘Neigh Rubbish’ sign spotted outside the main entrance of Crossford’s Overton Farm was a humorous reference to the farm’s locally-sourced meat contrasting drastically with revelations of horsemeat being found in ready meals at UK supermarkets.

But the term could also be used to describe the superb quality of horseracing excitement on offer as the farm’s course staged six keenly-contested point-to-point races at its Dumfriesshire and Stewartry meeting.

And none was more exciting than the 1.40pm AGA Ladies Open Race which saw Irish favourite Sotovik, ridden by Andrea Taylor, make a late dash to pip long-time leader Joueur D’estruval by a short head on the finishing line.

The soft Overton track also suited favourite Gunner Jack in the 2.15pm Bonhams Men’s Open Race, as jockey Ed Wrigley romped to victory in convincing style.

But it was a muddy frustrating day for top jockey Andrew Richardson. His only ride came on favourite Cool Star in the final race which he looked set to win until the horse fell at the second last fence, letting French challenger Ocarina in to claim the honours.

Race fans are already looking forward to the main Overton point-to-point meeting on Saturday, March 23.
