Jackie Lockhart in British curling team eliminated from Winter Olympics

THERE was heartache for Lesmahagow curler Jackie Lockhart (44) on Tuesday, when she and her four Great Britain women team-mates were eliminated from the Winter Olympics in Vancouver after losing 6-5 to Canada in extra ends.

This followed on from their equally disappointing 9-8 defeat to Denmark in their penultimate round robin match a day earlier, which effectively ended their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.

The Brits, led by 19-year-old skip Eve Muirhead, held a two shot lead after six ends against Denmark, but a mistake by Muirhead on the seventh end allowed the Danes to take three and a 7-6 lead as the match reached its crucial stages.

Jackie said after the Denmark loss: "That's a real tough one to take, but we have to make the hurt go away.

"We were in control in the first half of the game, but losing a three changed the momentum."

Jackie's mum Janette Steele watched Monday night's game on television, at home with her husband Robert.

Janette said: "Robert always gets very tight and nervous when Jackie's playing, but I just accept what happens.

"Jackie will be very disappointed to lose because this is her last year at the Winter Olympics. Her age will be catching up with her and she will be feeling very tired now.

"I am still very proud of her though, because she is the only Scottish lady to have won gold, silver and bronze medals at the World Curling Championships.

"She will continue to play for Laurencekirk Curling Club at club level."
