LA packing for International Children's Games

Los Angeles has become the first city to sign up for the 2011 Lanarkshire International Children's Games.

The event will see around 2000 young athletes from 50 countries compete here next August.

Councillor Jackie Burns, Games joint chair, was not surprised that it was an American city which was first to commit, within just five minutes of invitations being emailed to over 90 cities.

He said: "Having spoken with International Games President Torsten Rasch and Secretary General Richard Smith about the level of world-wide interest being shown in the Lanarkshire Games, it's obvious that Scotland is proving a something of a magnet.

"And that's especially true about the enquiries we have had from the United States ever since it was announced that Scotland was to host the 2011 Games.

"But from all the indications we have had, it looks like the world wants to come to Lanarkshire in 2011."
