Lanark bowler Marian Coats wins Lanarkshire Champion of Champions

LANARK Bowling Club member Marian Coats beat a Commonwealth Games gold medallist at Castlehill Bowling Club in Carluke to win the most prestigious title in her 18-year bowling career.

Marian (45), of Laverockhall, had a nail-biting 21-20 final victory over favourite Margaret Letham, of Hamilton’s Burnbank Bowling Club, to win the Blackwood Trophy contested at the Lanarkshire Champion of Champions tournament.

Marian, who works in customer services at Tesco in Lanark, showed bags of mettle to eventually win with the very last delivery of the match in front of a large crowd of around 300 spectators.

She said: “The score was 20-20 when there was a torrential rain shower accompanied by thunder and lightning.”
