Lanark Rams see off Dukla Pumpherston

TWENTY-something goal king Gary McMillan was the hero for the Lanark Rams football team on Sunday, when he netted a hat-trick in a sensational 5-2 victory over the much older stars of celebrity outfit Dukla Pumpherston.

Lanark Rams — a Lanark Grammar select side including current and former staff members — roared to success on a charity day which raised 350 for Yorkhill Hospital.

Rams player/manager Hugh Bone, a 55-year-old pupil support teacher, said: "It was a smashing day which the whole team thoroughly enjoyed.

"We were absolutely over the moon and delighted to win.

"Gary (an active breaks worker and ex-pupil at the Grammar) was absolutely fantastic for us. His goals were unbelievable and I think he caught Dukla by surprise.

"He is a big fellow and I think he outmuscled them.

"Although I'm in my 50s and we had two other players in their 60s, I think we were helped by having a lower average age than Dukla Pumpherston.

"I must also give a special mention to team coach Andy Barr for an inspiring pre-match team talk which I think was reminiscent of what Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho must say to his players.

"Before running onto the park, Andy simply said to us: 'Don't get rumped'."

"How could we fail to win after such words of wisdom?"
