Lanark swimmer Craig Forrest makes a splash

Given the largely miserable weather we’ve endured it is perhaps a surprise to hear that being dazzled by sunshine was one of the main hardships faced by Craig Forrest when doing the one-mile Great Scottish Swim at Strathclyde Park.

Lanark-born Craig (38), who owns Rosebank Garden Centre, was thrilled to finish a hugely creditable third out of 2500 swimmers in 20mins 42secs, despite the unexpected strain on his eyes as he battled along Strathclyde Loch on September 24.

He said: “I couldn’t see where I was going at all because of the sun shining down in the second part of the race.

“But there was no way of avoiding being dazzled because it’s not possible to wear shades when you are in the water. You always need to wear clear goggles because tinted ones are out as the water is dirty. Filthy water had also been a worry to me during the swim, as I’d watched how David Walliams had suffered tummy upsets and diarrhoea after swallowing plenty during his charity swim of the Thames.”
